A new day brought more excitement and the promise of better weather on our fourth day of this exciting Literacy Week. The Year 5/6 pupils took the skills and knowledge gained by the visits from the authors and storytellers this week, along with the practice sessions with Mrs. Price, and put them to work by hosting storytelling sessions for the other classes. Their first task was to construct special storytelling 'dens' and tents. These were located in their classroom, on the sun patio and in the quiet area. The stories were chosen rehearsed and learnt off by heart and the fun was about to begin!
Their first visitors were Nursery & Reception. The children were separated into small groups and were allocated a storyteller. Stories were accompanied by musical instruments and the children were sat enthralled at the experience. The next audience to arrive was Year 1/2. They were again split into small groups and distributed amongst the storytellers and into the dens and tents. Again, the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The final visitors to the story dens were Year 3/4/5. The same process continued with the class being split into small groups of about three or four children.
The afternoon saw the pupils put into teams and set off around the school in search of anwers to the 'Fairytale Treasure Hunt'. Each team was given a question sheet full of difficult teasers such as 'Who wrote the Little Mermaid?' and 'What was the original name of Little Red Riding Hood?'. The teams were made up of one pupil from each class. They had to find answer cards which were hidden throughout the school grounds, some in the willow garden, some on the field and even some in the woodlands. The winners will be announced ASAP.
The day came to a end with the Mad Hatter's Tea Party held in the hall for every pupil. The children and staff were decked out in their finest Mad Hats and were treated to cakes, biscuits and drinks. The winners of the best hats were then announced with the winners being: Year 5/6 - Leon, Year 3/4/5 - Emily, Year 1/2 - Jay and Nursery & Reception - Natasha.
